OverviewThe Bone Sculptor by A.S. Mink is a literary novel exploring human resilience, sacrifice, and moral dilemmas during the Nazi occupation of World War II. During World War II, in the charming medieval town of Arnhem in Holland, a loving family strives for normalcy under Nazi occupation. Their eldest son, Kees, a sensitive young man, finds comfort in his beautiful ancient home - a fortress with thick walls and private fields - an enchanting sanctuary where he brings magical creatures to life through his intricate bone carvings. However, it's 1941, and his magical world shatters when his father tricks him into enlisting in the SS. His Jewish friend, Ab, realises that Kees will not survive the brutality of war, so he enlists under a false identity and joins Kees on a harrowing journey to the Eastern Front. As tensions rise, Kees finds comfort in his friendship with Ab and his love for his family. He carefully navigates the line between the supernatural and survival as he dreams about returning home. But everything he treasures is called into question when he receives a mysterious letter from his stepmother. The letter unveils a dark secret about Ab that turns his world upside down. Will Kees's magical creations be his salvation or lead to an unforeseen and shocking destiny? For fans of The Book Thief and All the Light We Cannot See. The Bone Sculptor was longlisted for Mslexia's Novel Award. Mink is an artist and writer based in Arnhem, the Netherlands. She published a short non-fiction piece in Silver Apples literary magazine, chronicling the first few weeks in Ireland as an immigrant. She has been short-listed with her first book in Mslexia's Novella Prize in 2019 and longlisted with her second in Mslexia's Novel Competition in 2022.A.S. Mink's love for stories and books started in her childhood when her family moved from Holland to Ireland. After spending many extra hours trying to learn Dutch in her old primary school in Holland, she discovered that English suited her more than her native language. When the nuns taught her classmates Irish, they would send Mink to the dusty school library with an old wooden floor smelling of old paper. One hour a day of solitude - and she found a treasure trove of books her family didn't have at home. She read everything she could find: Roald Dahl, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the Brontë sisters - mysteries, love stories, detectives, historical fantasy and every encyclopedia on the self. When the family moved to a Georgian mansion in the middle of the Cork countryside, a house much like the ones centred in the books she loved, she spent her time imagining past inhabitants and their ghosts who still roamed the hallways and the secret staircase.Mink loves to walk through forests during rainstorms, and her favourite drink is tea - Earl Grey with cinnamon toast.
