On the harsh world of Anaranjado, alien refugees and abandoned humans fight for their right to exist. But are they choosing this battle or merely the puppets of mysterious forces with dark agendas? Karl wants nothing more than to settle down with Stefani and help her raise her daughter, Ella. But their family isn't whole. Stefani's adopted daughter Marri-a girl Karl also cares deeply for-is missing. Karl volunteers to go undercover in enemy territory to find her. Meanwhile, Stefani teams up with uneasy ally Iaz Delgassi and her band of resistance fighters to establish a stable foothold for their people. When a targeted attack goes horribly wrong, Marri pops up in a pirate broadcast calling out the resistance. Sporting a new name and looking years older than she should, Marri's sudden reappearance sets off a planet-wide race to discover where she is and what she plans next. Her family is desperate to find her. Anaranjado's shattered government is even more determined to remove her from the board. Marri, however, only answers to a strange, godlike entity. Yet, despite the fact she always seems one step ahead of her pursuers, even she is unaware of the big picture. As each group distracts themselves with infighting and rebellion, they're ignoring the only question that matters: Who-or what-is manipulating all these factions, and why?
