Overview

This book is written as a response to the growing health disparities within the African American communities in the US. The goals are to encourage a movement of greater holistic health awareness, empower the reader with knowledge that can be implemented immediately, and provide resources for the future needs of the community. The Black Family Health-O-Pedia was spearheaded by Dr. Tursha Hamilton an author, speaker, and educator. Dr. Tursha felt it was time that Naturopathic Doctors such as herself began to speak up and share their knowledge and experiences with the larger community. She felt that in order to have the African American community really begin to heal, that they must first know who to turn to for safe, accurate information about health and well being. Dr. Tursha invited 3 other brilliant doctors to come on the journey to heal the Black Family. This book is a result of that collaborative effort. This book is a must have! It has exceptional content for any reader looking to learn more about natural medicine, it's history and application, particularly as it pertains to the nuances of African American health. The disparities in health and their health implications are highlighted in the book and it equips you with the knowledge to discern key information, and learn to navigate the world of natural medicine. It is empowering for readers, easy to follow, well- written, and is an excellent addition to your bookshelf on natural medicine. ----Dr. Jaquel Patterson, Naturopathic Physician and current President of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians After reading this book I started reevaluating all of my and my families eating habits. Each page was an eye opener for me as a Fitness Coach, I cant wait to share this book with my clients. --Joycelyn Francis, JoyFit World LLC This book is an amazing contribution that explores how psychosocial-spiritual dimensions impact physical health and well-being in a way that is specifically geared to an African-American audience, who have historically been at the margins of the integrative wave in health -- Dr. Sunil Aggarwal, AIMS Institute, PLLC Everyone person who has experienced stress needs to read this book. The research and readability of this book will benefit all who read it. Whether you experience stress as a doctor or college student. This book is for you. -- Ms. Jordan Towns The Black Family Health-O-Pedia seems to effortlessly weave together scientific research, personal anecdotes, education on healthcare concerns that are common within the Black community, and information about the value of Naturopathic physicians in their treatment. It is a timely must-read, both for people struggling within the conventional healthcare system and those simply looking to stay healthy using the most natural means possible. It is an empowering book, not only because it discusses the impact of social challenges affecting our health and well-being as African Americans, but also because it teaches people how to take more control over their health outcomes. -- Dr. Tamara Dickson, Naturista Easy to follow and very informative. I can relate to the content of the book and enjoyed the scientific aspect to bring home the cultural themes. -- Ms. Ciarra Guthrie This book is not only relevant given today's climate but is also very necessary. It showed me how much I need it but also how much my peers and family members need one as well. -- Ms. Gabrielle Rahming I appreciated the section on General Adaptation Syndrome and the breakdown of the stress cycle. I think many people go through those stages and have no sense of what they are going through. I appreciate the information because it allows me to name the problem and seek help. I think it's so important to make the connection of how our history & society's struggle to recognize with truth and create change, has also taken a physical toll on the human body. -- Ms. Jazmine Hazelwood
