OverviewThe Black Electoral Dichotomy: An Assessment of Black Republican Electoral Behavior and Political Attitudes during the 2016 Presidential Election examines the political perspective of Black Republican voters contrasted to Black Republican leadership in North Carolina. The study used data collected through the PEW Research Center’s 2017 Political Typology Study and data collected on the voting behavior of North Carolina registered voters. Specifically, this approach looked at the social, political, and economic influences that contributed to how North Carolina Black Republicans voted during the 2016 presidential election. Through a survey of Black Republican leaders and registered voters who voted during the 2012 and 2016 presidential election cycles, this study seeks to identify the determining factors that speak to Black voters’ reason for supporting the Republican Party. Furthermore, The Black Electoral Dichotomy examines the various factors that shape the political premise of North Carolina’s Black Republicans and informed their support for Donald Trump. Bell endeavors to shed light on a Black political phenomenon that often goes unanalyzed: the political attitudes and electoral behavior of Black Republicans during the rise of Donald Trump. Although Dr. Bell places emphasis on North Carolina Black Republicans, his reasoning is applicable to the national level. Readers of The Black Electoral Dichotomy will learn and appreciate the diversity that attends to Black political experience. -- Daryl Taiwo Harris, Howard University That there are other books on Black electoral behavior is hardly a matter of dispute, but this book on the subject matter, with a focus on Black Republicans' electoral behavior and political attitudes by Aaron L. Bell, is unequalled by any of the previous works. Indeed, the analysis of the book is novel and of very high quality. The Black Electoral Dichotomy: An Assessment of Black Republican Electoral Behavior and Political Attitudes during the 2016 Presidential Election is compelling and well-informed; it offers a healthy comparison of the critical balance sheets of the achievements and shortcomings of Black electoral behavior and individuals in dealing with the vexing questions of the past and the present. It is ground-breaking and theoretically and methodologically well grounded. In sum, the book is a lucid and stringent corrective to the lazy complacency of much conventional wisdom about the past and the present of Black political behavior and, thus, quite timely in this presidential election season during which the Black vote is well sought. -- Abdul Karim Bangura, American University Center for Global Peace The Black Electoral Dichotomy takes a thoughtful look at the diverse attitudes and behaviors of Black Republicans during the 2016 presidential election. Dr. Aaron Bell paints a vivid picture of a community whose political beliefs are complex and multifaceted, often defying easy labels. Through thorough research and engaging analysis, this book explores the unique perspectives of Black Republican voters on critical issues like economic inequality and social justice. It's a compelling contribution to the ongoing conversation about race and politics in America, offering fresh insights that encourage a deeper understanding of Black electoral dynamics. This is a must-read for anyone seeking to engage with the realities of political identity in today’s world. -- Daphne M.
