The Birthday Present 2050

Overview

THE BIRTHDAY PRESENT 2050 is a dystopian drama. While there are in the dystopian/sci-fi genre fine books and movies there are few plays to either be read or performed. THE BIRTHDAY PRESENT 2050 takes place in a totalitarian system of government in which only people and things considered productive are assured existence. Among the non-productive are pets, flowers and any person over the age of 65. After a parent reaches that age, it is up to the next generation, the sons and daughters, to choose on each subsequent birthday between extending the life of the ageing parent or accumulating more comfort for themselves. In the world of 2050, there is no hunger, no homelessness, no crime except for one: the crime of holding memories of the past before all freedom of choice of how, whom and when to love was forbidden. The crime of memory is fatal. THE BIRTHDAY PRESENT 2050 is a one act, 3 scene play. Teresa Hallick is going to her 72nd birthday party to learn if her four daughters have given her the gift of life for another year -or not. Teresa is the oldest member of this society; the last holder of memories from then , as such the government fears her. It is wildely known and whispered about that Teresa was a rebel when the new government came into power. Being alive she still poses a threat. The government security forces observe the four daughters quarrel about extending their mother's life or not. But it is Teresa's 15 year old granddaughter, Trinka, allowed home from a gated school for this one birthday night of decision who provides the unexpected answer.

Author Information

Tania Wisbar was born in Berlin, Germany. Her mother, Eva Kroy Wisbar was a music and art magazine publisher, her father Frank Wisbar, one of Germany's best known film directors. They immigrated during the Nazi era to America. Arriving in Hollywood Frank Wisbar produced and directed the first filmed series made for television FIRESIDE THEATER. Tania's first job at the age of 11 to earn allowance was to read magazine stories for Frank and summarize those that might fit into the format of FIRESIDE THEATER. The parents divorced and Eva moved to Washington, D.C. as a Pentagon based U.S. Air Force Intelligence Officer before accepting an assignment to go back to Germany to interview newly released German soldiers imprisoned at the end of WW11 by the Soviets. Returning to the United States to go to college Tania has degrees in Theatre Arts, in Speech Pathology and in Special Education. She is the founding President and CEO of B.E.L.I., a day program for developmentally disabled adults with a large dance troupe that performs throughout each year in Los Angeles. For 14 years Tania was also the editor and reporter of a small beach town weekly newspaper. Having first met Jonathan Sanger in 2001 over a potential film based on the novel Tania had written LAST CEMETERY IN BERLIN she asked Sanger in 2011 if he would direct her stage play the just completed BIRTHDAY PRESENT 2050. THE BIRTHDAY PRESENT 2050 is now available for performance by professional, university and community theater groups, and can also be acquired as an audio play through Audible.com, iTunes.com and Amazon.com.
