Table of ContentsReviews'The Birth of Gossip' by Pamela Mann is women's historical fiction, telling the story of Margory, a 16th century midwife. A newcomer to the village of Brockminster, having fled her own lands following the persecution of Catholics, Margory tries to hide her aristocratic roots and the dark secrets of her past. But there are too many adversaries trying to stir up trouble. She has lost no babies or mothers in childbirth and her rival midwives are jealous of her success and losing customers. It's not long before she finds herself on trial for witchcraft. This is a novel in two halves; the first depicts increasing tensions in Brockminster, mysterious deaths and the machinations of the other midwives to blacken Margory's name and reputation. The second half of the book is told in flashback after an unexpected visitor from the past seeks and finds Margory and reminds her of the person she was in former days. The story travels back in time to her privileged upbringing and her romantic dreams of finding a man who loves her and having children of her own. The two stories don't coalesce until the very end of the book when there is an unexpected twist. This is a readable story full of historical detail and characterisation. It doesn't follow the usual cliched formula for a romance novel and leaves the reader questioning everything that has gone before.
