Overview

This book identifies 170 species of birds that either breed or regularly visit the islands of the Eastern Caribbean, from the Virgin Islands to Grenada. The introduction to the birds of the region is followed by short sectons on features of the breeding biology and ecology that characterize Eastern Caribbean birds including the habitats in which they live. Some hints are then given on how to get the best out of bird-watching and bird-photography. This is followed by a section on conservation. The main substance of the book is devoted to brief accounts of all the breeding species and the commoner migrants/visitors. Within a family, species are arranged for ease of comparison between those that are similar in appearance. Each species has a brief description with emphasis on key identification features, a review of its status, distribution and habitat and aspects of its breeding biology, diet and behaviour. All the commoner species are illustrated by a colour photograph. Where the male and female of a species differ markedly in appearance, both are depicted. The great majority of pictures were taken in the Eastern Caribbean but emphasis is given to the selection of photographs which best show the main features of the species. For this reason some close-up photographs of hand-held birds are included in preference to field shots. A list of the 130 breeding species and 129 other non-breeding migrants and winter visitors (omitting only vagrants not observed recently) forms and appendix at the end of the book. Finally there are two further appendices, one listing some of the best bird-watching places by island/islands group and the other a select bibliography to enable the reader to follow up his/her interest in an area in more detail.
