Reviews

There are not that many comprehensive books dealing with deep-sea habitats. This one can be recommended, because it gives much for its price and because it is interesting for everyone who wants to know how deep-sea organisms are able to survive in a decidedly hostile world. G. Van Der Velde Crustaceana ... written with clarity and in a readable style ... I recommend this textbook for upper-level undergraduates and masters-level graduate students ... The book is a timely contribution from an eminent deep-sea biologist. I applaud Peter Herring for inspiring students and scholars with a classical book on deep-sea biology. Limnology And Oceanography Bulletin The real strength of this book is its treatment of four discrete areas of sensory adaptations to living in the dark, deep sea, where visual cues do not play a role as in shallow, photic habitats. Limnology And Oceanography Bulletin I applaud the author for his realistic and unbiased recognition of the deap-sea benthic habitats. Limnology And Oceanography Bulletin ... marine science students, in particular, will find its breadth and depth of information invaluable. The Biology of the Deep Ocean has certainly become an essential addition to my bookshelf and Professor Herring will no doubt find himself quoted in many a BBC televsion programme in future! Penny Allen, BBC Natural History Unit, Ocean Challenge ... this book provides a very thorough overview, not just of life in the deep ocean, but of marine ecosystems as a whole. Penny Allen, BBC Natural History Unit, Ocean Challenge It's an absolutely fascinating read and is extremely comprehensive, with a wealth of detail throughout. Penny Allen, BBC Natural History Unit, Ocean Challenge ... a wealth of fascinating physical and biological facts and figures relating to the deep ocean ecosystem and its inhabitants. Penny Allen, BBC Natural History Unit, Ocean Challenge ... Strongly recommended. Biologist ... an excellent introduction for undergraduates and teachers wanting a better overview of this fascinating area. TEG News
