The Bible & Ancient Science: Principles of Interpretation

Overview

"Is the Bible a book of science?Over half of Americans believe science and religion are in conflict. Theologian and scientist Denis O. Lamoureux suggests that a common assumption of biblical interpretation fuels this struggle. Many Christians think Scripture is supposed to align with science in some sort of way. This idea is known as ""scientific concordism"" (or simply ""concordism""). But Lamoureux demonstrates that the Bible has an ancient science. During the inspiration of Scripture, the Holy Spirit came down to the level of the biblical writers and allowed them to use the science-of-the-day as a vessel for delivering life-changing, inerrant spiritual truths. Dr. Lamoureux explains how moving beyond concordism leads to a peaceful and God-honoring relationship between modern science and our Christian faith."

The key to helping those struggling with the compatibility of evolution and Christian faith goes far beyond simply coming to terms with scientific evidence. It must also involve learning to read the Bible in ways that respect its ancient context. With his expertise in both biblical hermeneutics and biological sciences, not to mention his accessible and irenic approach, Lamoureux continues to be my most trusted writer on evolution and Christianity, and the one I recommend to others more than any other. Peter Enns, PhD. Professor of Old Testament, Eastern University One of the great challenges of translating ancient texts is that the casual reader may come across terms like earth or sky and assume the ancient authors meant the same thing we do by those terms. But our language today is loaded with the scientific concepts of our times, and those concepts should not be read back into the biblical text. Lamoureux has been one of the clearest and most consistent opponents of that kind of scientific concordism. By following the hermeneutic principles laid out in this new book, we see again that when rightly understood, biblical faith and modern science do not conflict. Jim Stump, PhD. Vice President of the BioLogos Foundation Raised as the son of a pastor and being a student leader in Campus Crusade for Christ (now called CRU'), I wrestled with how my Christian faith could be related to my university studies in biology. After taking Dr. Lamoureux's course on Science and Religion and learning his principles of biblical interpretation, it became clear that the Bible is not a book of science. Freed from concordism I was then able to enjoy the God-glorifying splendor of modern science without any fear or guilt. Steve Hewko PhD. Director of Programs & Outreach. Wycliffe College, University of Toronto Lamoureux displays both expertise and wisdom for interpreting the two books given to us by God (e.g. Scripture and Nature). His work is the combination of years of experience in theology and biology, written in a clear and straightforward manner. The twenty-two principles of interpretation aid the reader or student in how one might be faithful to both the Bible and science, especially ancient science, with a focus on the creation accounts of Genesis 1 and 2. He proves to be an excellent guide through the difficult terrain related to the questions of origin. Though not all will be convinced by all his principles, any serious exegete of Scripture and Nature would be wise to consider his propositions. Joshua Stewart, PhD. Associate Professor of Old Testament & Hebrew, Luther Rice College & Seminary
