Overview
The most valuable quality a leader brings is vision and the tone to deliver it properly. Reagan had a vision of a shiny beacon on a hill that showed all the world how great capitalism and America was. His message inspired a nation. When a leader properly conveys vision the people are inspired and positive and will do more. Reagon garnered hope and optimism in a country that needed it. He made us feel special. He made us think we could win. Upon his passing, it seems that this great man only has sound bites and words to remember his time on earth, but I remember the feelings involved with him... deep positive optimism. That's how I will always remember it. I'm going to guess you weren't around in the late '70s. Our future was bleak. A third-rate country took our citizens hostage and we didn't have the will to do anything about it. The Soviet Union was our equal and to be feared. The energy was in short supply and prices were skyrocketing. Our President's response was to put a sweater on (no kidding!). I pulled up to a gas station and it said no gas today so I had to go back home. Oh yeah- there was a coming ice age! Despite all that, I didn't blame our President and actually voted for him in 1980. I despised Reagan- a rich war-mongering, I thought- or rather, I was told. Above all the good things he did, maybe #1 is he gave us hope again. He called us a City on a Shining Hill . He made it okay to be patriotic and proud of our country. He understood the role of government in our society (get out of the way). He turned me around and I voted for him in 1984. The only state he lost that year was Minnesota- the home state of the Democrat candidate, Mondale. Our country was very united in those days. And, of course, the only war he started was in Grenada- and it lasted about 2 hours. Meanwhile, his policies bankrupted the Soviet Union. And his policies (smaller government) laid the foundation for economic prosperity for the next 2 decades. You, my friend, are a victim of revisionist history.
