OverviewExcerpt from The Bering Sea Arbitration: Letters to the Times by Its Special Correspondent: Together With the Award On receipt Of intelligence of these seizures, Sir L. S. Sackville West, British Minister at Washington, at once made enquiries; and by the instructions Of Her Majesty's Government, on the 21st October, 1886, he entered a formal protest against these seizures Of British vessels. Mr. Bayard, the Secretary Of State, wrote, on the 3rd February, 1887, to Sir L. S. Sackville West, announcing the discharge Of the vessels, and the release Of all persons under arrest, adding that this order was issued without conclusion of any questions which may be found to be involved in these cases of seizure. The men in custody were released under circumstances of great hardship, being turned adrift, without means, in a place many hundreds Of miles from their homes.
