Table of ContentsReviewsAuthor Information"James Brand (1834-1899) was born in Canada and moved to the United States as a youth, working first as a carpenter's apprentice and entering Yale College in 1861 at the age of 27. in 1862, during the U.S. Civil War, he fought with the Union Army and was wounded at Fredericksburg and also fought at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. He mustered out of the army in 1863 and returned to Yale College where he graduated in 1866, the oldest of his class. He went on to study at Andover Theological Seminary and pastored for a couple of years before being called to lead the First Church of Oberlin, sometimes called the 'Finney Church.'
