"All the books in Capstone's Graphic Library series are priceless when it comes to educating children (and more than a few adults) about battles, wars, and general history.-- ""THE WEEK, Max Brooks' 7 favorite graphic novels about war"" For many young learners, it can never hurt to make history more palatable. The ""Graphic History"" series aims to do just that, and it achieves its goal superbly. Having had no prior experience with graphic novels, this reviewer was not sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised by the high level of historical accuracy, including direct quotes, vividly realistic illustrations, and abundant additional resources for readers who want to learn more now that their interest has been piqued, including the full text of the Gettysburg Address. The complex and devastating issues of the Civil War are understandably simplified here and the time line condensed, but different viewpoints are provided by various characters' dialogue and the important information is provided in additional text blocks.-- ""Children's Literature Comprehensive Database"" In May of 1663 the Confederate general, Robert E. Lee decided to take the American Civil war north into the state of Pennsylvania. The Civil war had been raging back and forth for two years now and Lee wanted to force President Lincoln's hand. Soon the armies of both sides were converging on the little town of Gettysburg and on July 1st a fierce battle began. The battle continued for two more days and when it ended on July 3rd, each side of the conflict had sustained about 22,000 casualties. The battle at Gettysburg was the most costly battle of the war and the events which took place there had a profound effect on the American people. Indeed it was such a momentous event that President Lincoln gave a speech in the little town in November of that year. The speech which he gave was short but over the years his words have moved people all over the world to think about the cost of all wars and conflicts. In this easy to follow account of one the most famous battles of all time, the author not only describes what occurred at Gettysburg but he also provides his readers with ample background information about slavery, the grievances of the southern states, and the civil war in general. Author Information

Steve originally hails from Oklahoma, and is a 2007 inductee into the Oklahoma Cartoonist Hall of Fame. He spent over a decade penciling comic books for DC Comics. Over the years, he's lent his artistic talents to a variety of other fields, ranging from t-shirt design to spot illustration to kids meal toys. He resides in north Texas where he makes a nice living as a product illustrator and designer for seasonal decorative items, occasionally dabbling in comics art and graphic novels. His wide range of experience falls in line with his personal philosophy as summed up by author Douglas Adams: I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be. Michael Burgan has written numerous books for children and young adults during his nearly 20 years as a freelance writer. Many of his books have focused on U.S. history, geography, and the lives of world leaders. Michael has won several awards for his writing, and his graphic novel version of the classic tale Frankenstein (Stone Arch Books) was a Junior Library Guild selection. Michael graduated from the University of Connecticut with a bachelor's degree in history. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with his cat, Callie.
