The year is 1775. Rebellious American colonists and British troops have recently engaged in hostilities around the Massachusetts towns of Lexington and Concord. Now the rebels--who call themselves patriots --are planning a siege of Boston. As the patriots begin to move soldiers and supplies, the British also maneuver to try to thwart them. In traditional history books, these actions unfold as the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775. After some scene-setting and a synopsis of the historical background, the narrative asks: What will you do? Initially, there are three choices: Readers can put themselves in the shoes of a patriot soldier, a British soldier, or a civilian living in Boston. Readers are directed to different pages in the book according to their choices. There are many more choices in store within each separate storyline. For example, the patriot soldier may choose either to head to Bunker Hill with Colonel William Prescott or to remain with the troops in Cambridge. Each decision leads to an abundance of additional choices. With three story paths, 37 choices, and 14 endings, this is history that is both suspenseful and thought-provoking. Part of the You Choose series, the book is also visually satisfying, with historical color illustrations and a crisp design. Aimed at below-level readers, this book seems likely to appeal to young history buffs and to youngsters who simply enjoy a page-turner.-- Children's Literature Comprehensive Database
