David Israel, the former head of the California Horse Racing Board and a close friend of Bob Baffert, was one of the country's leading sports columnists in the 1970s. His Chicago Tribune column was syndicated in hundreds of pages nationally. He then moved to Los Angeles and carved out a very successful career as a television writer and producer.
