He is co-lead of a major project (2022-2027) ‘Reconceiving International Law in an Era of Populism’ and author of Human Rights and Populism (2024). He re-joined ANU in 2015 after a varied career outside academia. Esmé Shirlow teaches and researches in public international law, international dispute settlement, and international investment law and arbitration. Esmé maintains a practice in the field of international law advising parties to investment treaty claims and in proceedings before the International Court of Justice. Prior to joining the ANU, she worked in the Australian Government’s Office of International Law. Wanshu Cong’s research interests include theory and history of international law, critical legal studies and the intersection of law and technology. Her current project draws from Marxist and Third World Approaches to International Law to exam the histories and contestations of freedom of information in international law. Donald R Rothwell is one of Australia’s leading experts in International Law with specific focus on the law of the sea, law of the polar regions, use of force and implementation of international law within Australia.
