Overview

The Artist Inside' evolved from a poem, to an art project, to a picture book, and a reflection guide. As both the author and illustrator, Cassie has created 24 collages to accompany the lyrical stanzas. Designed for readers across age levels and genres, it explores the idea of art as an infinitely present, universal language- felt in a genuine smile, heard in a song, or seen while walking down the sidewalk. In addition to themes of creativity, mindfulness, and self-knowing, the handcrafted collage illustrations reflect the poem's messages of interconnectedness and finding beauty in the unexpected. Also included, is an in-depth Artist's Note with an interactive back matter, guiding readers in identifying their own creative processes and to encourage creative mindsets. This section of the manuscript transforms the book into a resource for nurturing creativity, agency and self-reflection, expanding the book's audience to include older children and adults. Included in the section titled, ""Finding the Artist Inside"", a collage's many iterations, how to spot patterns in the creative process, and how these patterns tell us stories. The Understanding Our Creative Patterns section is inspired various ideas found in progressive pedagogy; we learn through reflecting on our experiences, the power of authentic feedback, and intrinsic motivation. It gives us clues as to how our learning or practice has grown, where it can keep growing, but most importantly it opens the door to discovering who we are as human beings. Art is a great connector because it transmits an artists beliefs, values, and experiences to the world and back. The Artist Inside promotes an expansive and inclusive definition of art: the act of doing anything is an act of creation and anything that is created, is a work of art to marvel. The hope is that this content connects readers to our shared humanity and sparks a creative learning practice to seek out the magic that is offered all around us.
