Overview

"This study of English goldsmiths and the art of horology focuses on the virtuoso chasers who decorated London gold boxes and watchcases in the 18th-century. The book looks at watch-cases, gold boxes and other metalwork, craft organization, the role of immigrant craftsmen in 18th-century London and the development of ""Rococo"" design as a whole. Part one of the book discusses the techniques, origins and patronage of the chasers. The second part covers the pre-eminent figures of the period: Ishmael Parbury, rated the best Englishman, Henry Manly and Augustin Heckel from Augsburg and George Michael Moser from Schaffhausen, whose work ranged from cases chased for the Ellicots and other leading watchmakers to royal presentation boxes."
