Overview

The Art of the Dealers: the NHL's Greatest General Managers is another ground-breaking effort by Matthew DiBiase. Like his first effort Bench Bosses: the NHL's Coaching Elite (the first hockey book to rate and rank the greatest NHL coaches of all time using a metrical system) The Art of the Dealers is not only the first hockey book to rate and rank the greatest general managers in NHL history; it is also the first book of sports history to rate and rank the greatest general managers of any of the four major North American sports (baseball, football, basketball, and hockey). The Art of the Dealers is based on 17 hours of interviews with NHL players and general managers (active and retired) like Lou Lamoriello, Cliff Fletcher, Ray Shero, Doug Wilson, Jim Rutherford, and David Poile who shared their insights and philosophies about what it takes to manage, build, and maintain great hockey teams. The Art of the Dealers also examines great managerial legends like Sam Pollock, Jack Adams, Conn Smythe, Harry Sinden, and Glen Sather; their great (and not so great) trades, draft picks, and free agent signings; how they discovered and hired (or fired) many of hockey's greatest coaches; their managerial methods and organizational philosophies; and their innovations that helped develop and maintain the NHL's greatest dynasties during the first century of NHL hockey.""The Art of the Dealers: The NHL's Greatest General Managers is an extremely well researched encyclopedia-type book that would be a great addition to any serious fans' hockey library.""--George Grimm, author ""Guardians of the Goal"" and ""We Did Everything But Win""

Author Information

Matthew DiBiase has had a life-long love affair with sports history. Born and raised in Southern New Jersey, he attended college at Rutgers University-Camden College of Arts and Sciences as an undergraduate and graduate student where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in World History (with a minor in Political Science) and his Master's Degree in American History (with a focus in Public History). Matt began writing when he was 17 and by the time he had entered graduate school in college he had developed his writing skills: writing a weekly op-ed column for his college newspaper throughout his graduate school experience. In 1991 Matt made his college studies in history pay off when he started working for the National Archives at Philadelphia and has remained there ever since, working tirelessly in helping the general public learn more about American history. Throughout the years Matt never lost his love for writing poetry, song lyrics, and sports history. In 2015 he published his first book Bench Bosses: the NHL's Coaching Elite, courtesy of Fenn Imprints, a subsidiary of Penguin Random House Canada. When he is not working or writing, Matthew loves reading, high-pointing, visiting State and foreign Capitols, travelling, Facebook, and also podcasting every Thursday Night from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM EST with his colleagues Mike, Sidekick, Brandon, and Chris on the Frathouse Sports Show on www.blogtalkradio.com
