The Art of Speed: The Motorcycles of the Barber Collection

Overview

This book features the motorcycles of the Barber Collection, housed in the popular Barber Museum. George Barber recognized that there was not a museum which reflected the history of motorcycles around the world. He wanted to preserve motorcycle history in the United States in a way that represents an international aspect and to supply an example of motorcycles that until then could only have been seen in books and magazines. This was the theme used in the development of the Barber Collection. In 1994, the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum became a 501c(3) non-profit foundation and on March 14, 1995, the museum was officially opened to the public in its original location on Birmingham's Southside. The Museum reopened at its new location at The Barber Motorsports Park on September 19, 2003. It contains bikes from 16 countries representing 143 marques, from production street bikes to rare one-off Grand Prix race machinery. The Art of Speed focuses on the most significant high-performance racing and street bikes that compose the core of the collection. Photographer Marc Bondarenko, who photographed many of the motorcycles in the Guggenheim's Art of the Motorcycle, one of the best-selling motorcycle books of all time, created portrait photography of a selection of motorcycles from the collection. The bikes selected will create a narrative, telling the story of the high-performance motorcycle from the earliest years until today. Featuring the most notable high-performance motorcycles in history, such as the AJS Porcupine, BSA Gold Star, Ducati, Desmosedici, Vincent Black Shadow, and Yamaha TZ7000.
