He served in the Army from 1951 to 1953. He graduated from Pace College (now Pace University) in 1955. He learned to play chess by watching games between his older sister and a cousin. He won the New York High School Championship while still in junior high school. He won the United States Junior Championship in 1948 and 1949, the United States Open in 1950, and the United States Championship, an invitation-only event, in 1954. He won or tied for first place in five United States Opens. He was awarded the title of grandmaster in 1957. He played for the United States in five Chess Olympiads.
