OverviewThe Argonautica tells the story of the journey of Jason and the Argonauts to the land of Colchis in search of the Golden Fleece. The story of the Argonauts was a traditional cycle of myths which Apollonius of Rhodes wove into this saga at the turn of the third century BCE. Apollonius, born about 270 BC, was a librarian at the great Library of Alexandria. He composed the Argonautica in his youth, but it got a poor reception in Alexandria. Rejected, he moved to Rhodes where he gained fame as a teacher, and his poem got more respect. Eventually he returned to Alexandria, where the Argonautica was finally acclaimed.Apollonius was an ancient Greek author, best known for the Argonautica, an epic poem about Jason and the Argonauts and their quest for the Golden Fleece. Apollonius' poetry also reflects some of the more modern trends of Hellenistic literature and scholarship. For example; religion and myth was typically rationalized and looked on more as an allegorical force, rather than as the literal truth of Hesiod's approach. Also, Apollonius' work makes many more forays into areas such as local customs, the origins of cities, etc, reflecting the Hellenistic interest in geography, ethnography, comparative religion, etc. Full Product DetailsAuthor: R C Seaton , ApolloniusPublisher: Independently Published Imprint: Independently Published Dimensions: Width: 15.20cm , Height: 1.00cm , Length: 22.90cm Weight: 0.259kg ISBN: 9781700626783ISBN 10: 1700626787 Pages: 170 Publication Date: 18 October 2019 Audience: General/trade , General Format: Paperback Publisher's Status: Active Availability: Available To Order We have confirmation that this item is in stock with the supplier.
