Overview

The end of summer, 1948, finds the millionaire Carrolls overdue to return home to the Sanctuary from their anniversary trip abroad. Unbeknownst to them, the somewhat idyllic life which had developed within their secluded community has become threatened by strangers and a government too interested in the prehensile tail of one of their children. But overseas, Galen and Linara are dealing with their own issues. Separated in Europe, the couple are carried across Arctic waters into a political climate wholly separate from what they had imagined about Galen's remote homeland. For Avenbruch, the capital of a large microcontinent located in the Far North, is separated by culture and physiology as much as it is separated by personal loyalties. Linara is resurrected as nobility if not actual royalty as she is indulged and then manipulated within the sphere of political galas, while Galen--the composite of Ingram, Rupert, Mr. Carroll, and other personalities living behind an albinoid mask--strives to locate his missing wife. His family's heirloom blade again within his possession, he strikes out into the snow in search of answers, hope, and the ability to eventually return home to Brescott.
