Overview

The writer of this volume has hold of and idea, - the idea of the need of the Church for the revitalizing processes of prayer and worship. He presents his thought in a few racy, sketchy pages which may be read through in an hour or two and which are of the sort that once begun will not be laid down until finished. The matter of 'his thought is presented in imaginative form. A new Archbishop of Canterbury has been consecrated whose first act is to announce to the Church of England that he wishes the Church put to a test of two years' duration. In the period designated all church societies, guilds and organizations, of whatsoever sort, are to suspend operations and the Prayer Book is to be rigidly adhered to in every particular. All its obscure provisions and dead-letter rubrics and neglected Offices are to be observed and enforced with literal interpretation. The test went into effect and its results are told. It is here that issue may be taken with this little work, for even the imaginative presentation of an idea may suggest underlying practicality in the idea itself. This writer, starting with the premise that the Church needs new life in her prayers and in her worship, altogether fails to make us visualize his proposed method for the attainment of his end. Moreover he presents a picture of the Church at the end of the two years' test - as having undergone a Catholic revival in practices, ritual, vestments and teaching - all the result of the unlimited universal use of the Prayer Book, that product of the Reformation! The arguments are specious, the presentation clever, the purpose subtle, clearly propaganda. -The Chronicle
