Excerpt from The Archaeology of the Holy Land Professor Steuernagel's Tell el-mntesellim (leipzig, to Professor Sellin's Tell T a'annee (vienna, and Eine Natnlese anf a'em Tell T a'annee (vienna, from volumes 1 and lii of the Denksenrzften of the Vienna Academy (phil.-hist. Klasse) respectively, and to the same scholar's jerieno (leipzig, 1913) in which Dr. Watzinger co-operated. He is also greatly indebted to Pere Hugues Vincent's Canaan a apres L'exploration retente (paris, Lastly, he has to acknowledge his Obligations to the numerous works which have been published from time to time by the Palestine Exploration Fund, amongst which A Monna' of Many Cities, by Dr. F. J. Bliss, Excavations in Palestine, written by the same scholar in co-operation with Professor R. A. S. Macalister, and Professor F linders Petrie's Tell el-hesy, must be specially mentioned. But most Of all is he indebted to Professor Macalister's Excavation of Gezer (3 published under the auspices of the same fund. This epoch-making work is by far the most important contribution that has been made to the science of Palestinian Archaeology, and is in fact an inexhaustible mine of information upon which all students Of the subject will be largely dependent for many years to come. The same scholar has also, in the midst Of all his other work, found time to give him additional information on some Of the subjects dis cussed in this present volume, for which he takes this Opportunity of expressing his sincere thanks.
