OverviewAccording to ancient tradition, Saint Jude Thaddeus, one of the Apostles of Jesus of Nazareth, was sent to evangelize Mesopotamia, and there he converted the Assyrian people to Christianity. The Assyrians are one of the oldest Christian peoples and still speak the Aramaic language that was spoken by Jesus Christ. When the Islamic State set about to establish a new Caliphate, they set their sight upon the Assyrian Christians, to exterminate them. They placed on the homes of Assyrian Christians in the region the Arabic letter ""Nūn"" (ن), the ""Mark of the Nazarene,"" to target them for elimination. Many Assyrians were tortured and killed by ISIS, and many more had to flee from their homes and were displaced by the ethnic cleansing carried out by the Islamic State, seemingly to the indifference of the global community. The war and instability brought about by ISIS perpetuated a migrant crisis in which millions of people, claiming to be refugees, migrated to Europe seeking asylum. In these perilous times, as Christians look to Christ and His Apostles for guidance, perhaps it is important to examine the legacy of Saint Thaddeus, the Assyrian Church of the East, whose survival is at risk.
