Overview

Excerpt from The Analogy of Revelation and Science: Established in a Series of Lectures Delivered Before the University of Oxford, in the Year 1833, on the Foundation of the Late Rev. John Bampton, M.A., Canon of Salisbury IN submitting the subjoined disquisitions to the ordeal of public opinion, the author, in times less portentous, would have left his views to explain themselves in the regular course of discussion. In the nature and extent Of his inquiries he would have found sufficient grounds for concluding, that his Objects neither required illustration nor needed apology. But in obeying the commanding motives, which have impelled him to enter a field, atonce new and extensive, and in which he acknowledges his inquiries have been desultory, and his experi ence is limited; he has been led to express his Opin ions with a freedom, which may be thought to de mand explanation; and has been drawn into a course of investigation, to which it seems not pre mature to bespeak a patient attention.
