Overview

The main subject of the following thesis is the study of the evolution of French perceptions of American involvement in Vietnam. We have based our analysis on the historiography of two distinct periods, namely the 1960s-1970s and the 1990s-2000s. The aim is to determine whether there has been a real change in the way authors view American involvement and, if so, what the causes of this change are. The thesis is structured thematically and divided into three chapters. The first chapter addresses the choice and scope of the weapons used, the second examines the concepts of communism and democracy, and the last chapter deals with the concept of imperialism and colonialism. For each of the themes examined, we summarize the perception that emerges from each of the authors in order to compare the ideological trends specific to the two periods studied. We will then be able to conclude that there has indeed been a significant shift in perceptions. This shift is reflected in an increasingly less critical approach to American involvement.
