Reviews

My daughter Lindsey has captured something spectacular here. God didn't make any mistakes when He designed our minds; He just gave some of us a little more 'spark' than others. The Amazing Brain Club is a beautiful invitation for every child to stop hiding their differences and start celebrating the brilliant way they were made. I'm ready to join the club--are you? * Bob Goff, New York Times bestselling author of Love Does and Everybody, Always * This book, which celebrates neurodiversity and the value of all children and their unique brains, will appeal primarily to faith-based collections. The author's premise is that each brain was designed by God, not determined by genetics, and each brain is amazing. Some brains are 'quiet' and 'focused' while other brains are 'zoomy,' containing many ideas, interests, and questions. These latter brains, in children who would be described as having ADHD, are the focus of the story. The illustrations and metaphors used to describe the brains of children are clever and uplifting, allowing children with or without ADHD to have a much better understanding of how those with it learn and function. Rather than knowledge sorted into 'file cabinets,' in the 'zoomy' brain, information is like 'confetti.' Ideas float like 'glitter in a snow globe or feathers after a pillow fight.' This allows for a different kind of problem-solving and a passion for understanding topics of interest with intensity and depth. Children with ADHD are said to have enough energy to 'power a whole city,' but the author also acknowledges that sometimes these children cannot pay attention, control their bodies, or conform to classroom expectations. However, every person has a 'purpose and a role to play in God's story, using the bodies and minds we've been given.' VERDICT A joyful, faith-based story about the brains of children with ADHD. * School Library Journal *
