This is such a lovely story about friendship and the characters could not be more darling. The illustrations are actual photographs which I found clever and engaging. The authors' imaginations shine through in this bright and creative picture book. This sweet book is a fun mix of the real and imaginary and would be a great book for helping any child who has recently moved or started day care or school. The authors tell Ellie's story from the perspective of a young child, embodied in stuffed elephant Ellie. When Ellie first moves to a new neighborhood, she feels lonely. Then she meets Pudgy, a penguin who enjoys all the same things as Ellie. The simple language, realistic photos, and colorful layout are engaging for young readers. As a parent of young children and an educator, I highly recommend Ellie's first adventure, Ellie Makes a New Friend. The presentation for this story is precious. Bright, colorful pictures using stuffed animals tell the story and fill every page. Larger print and colorful font make the book easy for the younger readers to follow along or read to themselves. Children will be able to relate to wanting friends to play with. Children will be inspired to be creative with their stuffed animals and the last page has a website to facilitate this. The Adventures of Ellie the Elephant are among my three-year-old son's most requested books at bedtime, and we'll often read them every night for spans of over a week at a time. The real-world photography provide intriguing yet accessible imagery for him to examine and interpret, and when combined with the soft storytelling, they have a much-needed calming affect on an otherwise busy little boy. Best of all, they encourage him to create his own stories using his own toys.

Author Information

Mother-daughter duo Marci Fair and Elle Fair coauthor a series of books about ten-year-old Elle's two favorite stuffed animals, Ellie the Elephant and Pudgy the Penguin. Even as a working mother of four, Marci has always made time to read bedtime stories to her kids and encouraged them to read on their own, as well. A big fan of books and stuffed animals both, Elle enjoys working on this special project with her mom. In addition to her professional career, Marci is the founder of Kares 4 Kids, a nonprofit organization that has served over 18,000 children in need since 2005. She is also the author of the award-winning book TILT: 7 Solutions to Be a Guilt-Free Working Mom, liberating other women with her hard-won wisdom- Balance is impossible; memories are better.
