OverviewSouthern Africa has long been recognised as a major centre of diversity for the Amaryllidaceae, and this is the first comprehensive, illustrated account of the family in southern Africa, covering all 18 genera and over 263 taxa. Author Graham Duncan provides a botanical description for each species, along with synonyms, information on distinguishing features, life cycle, distribution, habitat, cultivation, and conservation status. Maps and identification keys accompany the text, along with colour photographs and botanical paintings. These stunning paintings are the result of 45 years work by the late artist Barbara Jeppe and her daughter Leigh Voigt. There is a general chapter on cultivation of the winter-rainfall, summer-rainfall and evergreen species, and notes on their cultivation in the northern hemisphere. Glossary and bibliography are also included. The Amaryllidaceae of Southern Africa will long be considered the definitive work on this fascinating and popular plant family in southern Africa. He is the author of many popular articles, taxonomic papers and books, including The Genus Lachenalia (Kew Publishing, 2012). He has described over 40 plant taxa, is a regular contributor to Curtis's Botanical Magazine, and a recipient of the International Bulb Society's Herbert Medal, awarded in 2001. Barbara Jeppe was one of South Africa's foremost botanical illustrators, whose books include Aloes; Natal Wild-flowers; South Africa is my Garden; Spring and Winter Flowering Bulbs of the Cape. She was a meticulous and keen observer and single-minded in her research, with a broad knowledge of all aspects of ecology and geology, which gave her the ability to predict where a particular species would be likely to grow. Leigh Voigt has illustrated many books, and has held over fifteen solo exhibitions and participated in many group shows, both in South Africa and internationally. After her mother's death in 1999 she took on the painting of the Amaryllidaceae, resulting in the publication of this book. Tab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
