The Air Raids That Shook Britain During the Great War: Shown in a Chronological Series of Official Ordnance Survey Maps

Overview

During the Great War, Britain faced a new and terrifying form of warfare - attacks from the sky. What began in 1915 as sporadic, small-scale raids by Zeppelins - huge hydrogen-filled airships - soon evolved into wide-ranging attacks by multiple airships the length and breadth of the country. Initially Britain struggled to oppose the raids, but when several airships were destroyed in the autumn of 1916, Germany adopted a new strategy. Now the main threat to Britain came from a squadron of twin-engined Gotha bombers supported by another of massive Stakken 'Giants', as this determined campaign of terror continued, attempting to break Britain's resolve. Between December 1914 and the end of the war there were 51 airship raids, 27 by Gothas/'Giants' and 25 by small aeroplanes and seaplanes. These 103 raids claimed 1,414 lives and left 3,416 injured. This remarkable collection of 68 maps, some illustrating multiple raids, was originally published in two separate volumes to accompany the authoritative multi-volume official history, The War in the Air, published between 1922 and 1937. These maps meticulously chart the raids in sequence, revealing how the aerial threat developed over time. Now, for the first time, these maps are accompanied by detailed expert commentary from Ian Castle, the foremost authority on Germany's air raids on Britain during the Great War. This is an essential atlas for every historian of the Great War - whether focused on aviation, strategy or the civilian experience on the Home Front.
