He retired from the National Science Foundation in 1990 and was Dean of Engineering at Washington State University from 1970-1982. He has served as an officer of several engineering and science organizations and is member of the National Academy of Engineering. He has degrees from Ohio State University, University of Delaware, and Michigan State University, and participated in the SMG Program at Harvard University.
