One of the best things about being of a certain age is having friends who have been our friends for decades--the kinds of friends we can talk to about the enjoyable as well as the agonizing aspects of growing older. Reading The Afternoon of Life is like pulling up a chair alongside a lifelong godly and wise friend and spending the afternoon in a deep and open conversation about all the stuff that is bringing joy and sorrow, frustration and fulfillment, anxiety and rest into our lives.--Nancy Guthrie, Author and Bible Teacher Reading Elyse Fitzpatrick's Afternoon of Life, I felt as if a wise and tender-hearted counselor had pulled up a chair next to me and opened treasures of insight stored in her heart, willingly sharing them in language I could relate to and be comforted by. Elyse calls on her readers to follow the example of that valiant woman who fears the Lord above all else, to grow in strength and dignity, and to have the courage born of a resilient heart rooted in the grand cause of glorifying the Father. Her words are beautifully crafted, and she presents compelling truth wrapped in her unique and delightful humor. Elyse's advice is soundly saturated in Scripture, and she makes her appeal to us with a sensitivity and compassion that reveals she has tested these principles on her own journey and found Christ to be thoroughly trustworthy. The meaningful questions posed at the end of each chapter add incredible value to a book already packed to the brim with perceptive, practical applications for those of us searching for joy and purpose in the ""afternoon"" hours of our lives.--Elizabeth A. Mitchell, Author, MorningSide and Journey for the Heart What a helpful book to read as my own afternoon begins. As a genuine big sister in the faith, Elyse offers us both the theology and the practicality of aging. Her words are built on a foundation of God's sovereignty and his good work in us and through us as we mature biologically and spiritually. She offers much practical wisdom for how we might honor our Lord and serve others in the afternoon, evening, and nightfall of life. I love her tone, humor, and lightness in the Lord. I can't wait to read this book again, with the other older sisters in my own local church, as we grab hold of all that God has for us and wants to do through us in this season of life.--Jen Oshman, Author, Speaker, Women's Ministry Director When Elyse asked if I'd read The Afternoon of Life, I was anxious to do so. One, because I love reading Elyse's books and, two, because when it was originally published, I was still living in the segment of ""midday."" This was one of her books I had yet to read. As usual, I was not disappointed. Elyse seamlessly weaves Scripture alongside the experiences that many of us face in the afternoons of our lives. Her wisdom, imagery, and stories shape God's story in such a way that helps us make sense of ours. This is what good biblical counsel should be.--Ann Maree Goudzwaard, Executive Director, Help[H]er When The Afternoon of Life was first published, I was thirty. I was certainly not considering the questions--and griefs--of life's afternoon. To come to this book now is to see how needed it is, as we make peace with the constancy of change. Thank God for someone like Elyse Fitzpatrick who can lift our eyes beyond sorrow to see God's goodness and seek his glory. And thank God she can make us laugh at the days to come. I'm grateful for the honesty and theological richness of this book, and I know others will be too.--Jen Pollock Michel, Author and Speaker
