OverviewAs a child, I first heard about Afghanistan through the touching story of Kabuli Baba, a humble fruit seller whose kindness inspired Rabindranath Tagore's famous tale Kabuliwala. For me, Afghanistan was initially a land of warm-hearted people, distant mountains, and long roads of longing. But history later revealed another face of Afghanistan -- a land that shaped the history of South Asia through conquerors, saints, traders, and travelers. From Mahmud of Ghazni to the Chishti saints, Afghanistan has been deeply connected with the cultural and political history of the region. Between 1989 and 2023, I visited Afghanistan five times, witnessing the country through some of its most turbulent periods: the era of jihad, the rise of the Taliban, the American presence, and the country's constant struggle for stability. This book is a personal journey through history, memory, travel, and reflection, exploring Afghanistan not only as a land of conflict but also as a land of people, culture, and enduring resilience.
