Author Information

Sibylle von Olfers (1881-1916), a German author and illustrator, shaped the landscape of children's literature. Born into Königsberg's Metgethen estate, her upbringing within a creative family kindled her artistic passion. Her imaginative games earned her the moniker ""wild bumblebee."" Crafting picture books for her sister fostered an intimate bond. In 1906, her renowned work ""The Root Children"" debuted, captivating readers with its narrative and intricate art. Briefly embracing a religious life as a nun added another layer to her story. Despite her premature passing, Olfers' legacy endures, a testament to the enduring magic of her creativity and storytelling. Katrin van der Leeden was born and raised in Germany, where she attended the University of Munich to complete her Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics (German as a Foreign Language), Art History, and Literature. In 1994, Katrin van der Leeden immigrated to Canada, where she obtained a Bachelor of Education, as well as a Master of Education from the University of Victoria. Since 2000, she has been working as a teacher in both high school and elementary school in Victoria, BC, Canada.
