The Adventures of DumDum: A Directionally Impaired Chicken

Overview

The Adventures of Dumdum is Cheri's very first published book. The inspiration for the story began on the family farm, Coldstream Icelandic Sheep Farm-a beautiful place filled with wildflower meadows. Even with six Icelandic sheep, something felt missing: the farm needed chickens. At the time, the author knew very little about chickens except that they were beautiful and laid eggs. Everything changed after falling in love with a small Polish flock at 4D and bringing them home that very same day. That evening, it quickly became clear how special little Dumdum was. When it was time to close the coop, Dumdum was perched on the roof instead of safely inside. The author's son had to stand on a chair in the rain to carefully lift her off the roof and hand her down. While drying her off, the author affectionately remarked that she was such a little ""Dumdum"" and reminded her that she needed to roost inside the coop-especially in the rain. That moment was only the first of many adventures. Followers of the farm's Facebook page delighted in reading about Dumdum's antics and eventually encouraged the author to turn the stories into a book. Writing Dumdum's story brought plenty of laughter, and the author believes it is a charming tale for children and grown-ups alike. After all, laughter is good for the heart and soul.

Author Information

I am Shepherd of Coldstream Icelandic Sheep in the beautiful state of Maine. Retired from engineering in 2013 and now living my dream. My farm has been a journey filled with unspeakable joy and grief so raw I felt as if my heart was being torn apart. The year my first lambs were born, my son took his own life. I am still grieving within. There are still times when sorrow washes over me like the waves of a cold, dark winter sea. As I await each year's lambs, my heart is full of expectation. Joy fills my heart as the lambs grow within my ewes' ever-expanding bellies. Soon lambs will be playing and bouncing about again. Hope has welled up in me, and life is full of promise.I write poetry and stories when it flows out to express the feelings within. Sometimes memories of long ago. I have always been different, unique in spirit. Something so different I really didn't fit in with what the world has classified as normal. But that's okay. I am as God intended. I have found Peace in who I am, and there is a plan and purpose for my life now. It brings laughter to my Spirit and Fulfillment. I am a Shepherd and I am loved. Most of the stories I have written are about the animals born and raised on my farm. Because the stories are true, there is a variety of emotions within them. I am so excited and happy during lambing each spring. There are times that sorrow overcomes me if I lose a member of my flock. Some of my stories are about chickens, but there are many more about sheep. After all I am a Shepherd. I raise sheep for their beautiful fleeces, which I sell to artisans and spinners. Not one has ever been or will ever be eaten. They are loved from the moment they are born. Writing has been an expression of the essence of who I am. You may find grammatical errors, maybe even some words you have never seen before. No worries, I have dyslexia, but I don't try to hide it. I just let it flow because it is part of who I am. I hope you enjoy reading my stories as much as I enjoy sharing them.
