Overview

Karl's Here! is a unique look at elementary school volunteering. The author's personal account of his volunteer experiences provides a look at the interaction between the volunteer, the teacher, and the students. Karl's volunteer roles are detailed as he becomes part of the classroom teaching team. He describes volunteer-led Special and Fun Projects with the students that are woven into the class curriculum by the teacher. Karl argues that adults, particularly senior citizens, can make a significant impact in the classroom, have fun, and receive a host of unexpected personal rewards.

Author Information

Karl Van Asselt has authored six books, published more than 60 articles in journals and magazines, and has been engaged in newspaper writing for decades. Now semi-retired, Karl elected to spend some of his free time as an elementary school volunteer. I had no intention of writing about the volunteer experience, Karl says. But I had repeatedly told the students that they would enjoy writing if they wrote about fun, personal experiences. I decided to follow my own good advice and write about my school experience.
