OverviewThe textbook is a pilot-tested curriculum which provides adult new readers with an introduction to the library and its use. The text uses a team framework. The team - reader, tutor, library staff member - works together on four units which make up the curriculum. Each unit includes goals, objectives, activities and notes on mastering key library skills. The first unit introduces the library to the new reader, starting with locating the library and concluding with learning the value of the library to the community. Basic information-seeking skills are covered in unit 2 which includes the use of both the standard and computerized card catalogue. Unit 3 instructs the new reader in the use of newspapers and periodicals concentrating on their practical applications - job opportunities, consumer information, current events - without neglecting their recreational value. The curriculum ends with a unit on special collections and services which illustrate the wide range of materials contained within the library. This is a guide to teaching new readers all they need to know to begin using the library comfortably and effectively. Once the curriculum is complete, new readers should have gained the skills they need to get the information they want, thereby increasing their ability and enjoyment in using the library.
