The Absence of Light: Radical Accountability and a Way Forward

Overview

What if the greatest threat to justice isn't the people fighting against it, but the good people who looked away? Christie Hardwick had the career, the causes, the spiritual practices, and the best of intentions. She wrote checks to nonprofits, voted in every election, and believed love would prevail. But when the cracks in democracy widened, she was forced to confront an uncomfortable truth: good intentions are not the same as action. The Absence of Light is a raw, unflinching self-inventory, a confession from a Black woman, ordained minister, former tech executive, and leadership coach who examines how privilege, comfort, and spiritual bypassing kept her from showing up when it mattered most. This is not a book about shame. It is a blueprint for what comes next: how comfort zones and echo chambers quietly erode civic engagement, why ""checkbook activism"" soothes our conscience but fails our communities, how spiritual practices can shield us from the very pain meant to wake us up, a practical framework for radical accountability without self-destruction, and the path from remorse through self-forgiveness to renewed, meaningful engagement. For anyone who has ever wondered: Am I doing enough? Did my silence contribute to this? And what do I do now?

Reviews

""In The Absence of Light, Christie Hardwick writes 'If these words inspire a new way forward in you, that is my dream come true.' I think her dreams are about to come true. In this slim volume, Christie takes us on her own journey of self-assessment, holding herself accountable for ways she could have bettered the lives of those in her own life as well as in our broader world. It is a journey of love, not shame, one that inspired me to make my own self-assessment. As Christie writes, 'These words may or may not resonate with you...But if they do, come with me.' We would each benefit enormously by coming with Christie on her journey and using it as a roadmap for one of our own."" -- Kevin Jennings Author, One in Ten and Mamas Boy, Preachers son, CEO Lambda Legal ""Christie Hardwick has approached the topic of self-assessment as an inspirational and universal message for readers. Using the memoir genre as a roadmap guiding her personal journey to self-awareness, Hardwick reaches deep in her life's twists and turns and urges each of us to hold up our own mirror. Absence of Light explores Hardwick's story through the meaning of her past experiences and how they shaped the author's present life. She exposes her vulnerability and worldview while making a lasting emotional connection with the reader."" -- R. Franklin James, Author, Hollis Morgan Mysteries
