Overview

This book tells the story of the author’s overland journey around the globe.  A circumnavigation starting from Great Malvern in Worcestershire, England and using the world’s public transport.  A journey designed to join together buses, boats and, especially, trains – the Trans-Siberian, the railway to Tibet (the highest in the world), Malaysia’s Jungle Line, Australia’s Indian Pacific, Amtrak and many others.  Crossing the Pacific Ocean by hitching a lift on a container ship.  Meeting so many people in so many countries, experiencing their natural generosity and learning the negligible differences between us.  A global journey with an intention to observe and not to judge.  Travelling ever forward to the destination of home.

Author Information

Alan Soper is a retired company director with a background in Logistics and Buildings management, companies characterised by large workforces.  Born and brought up in Wimbledon, he is a graduate from the University of Exeter.  With a lifelong interest in both people and railways, he set out to journey overland around the world to ride the world's railways and find the world's people - by sitting next to them on a train.  He also has an interest in many aspects of the performing arts, leading two amateur drama groups, directing plays and musicals and acting.  He has sung for many years with a local chamber choir.  He is married with two adult sons and lives in Worcestershire.
