That Why Child CB

Overview

When Carol Jeffrey was very young, the staff at her school spoke of her secretly among themselves as 'That Why Child'. The search for the 'Why and What for?' of experience has always inspired her active interest and formed the permanent style of her work as a psychotherapist. She began her career teaching Music and English. After some years she founded a little 'school' in her own home for three or four children with special learning or emotional needs. This work eventually led to her being involved in the establishment of the Child Guidance Service in Kent. The intensive work and experience of therapy in the clinics of the Child Guidance Service resulted in her entering into a long Jungian analysis with Michael Fordham, an analysis which she has described as 'an epic encounter which expanded my knowledge and enhanced my experience to a degree of fertile contentment which has remained undiminished ever since.' In 1952 she became a founder member of The Open Way Association and a staff member of its Psychotherapy Clinic. Full-time therapy in the Clinic led to the development of an expanding private practice which has continued ever since. This book records some of the experiences of the past fifty years. It also includes a series of paintings of peacocks which were studied and interpreted by C. G. Jung.

Reviews

There is nothing ordinary about Carol Jeffrey, nor her remarkable children either, and one is frequently left startled or lost in admiration for her sensitiveness and skill with her patients, her children and herself...It is a thought-provoking book, and one which will be read by psychotherapists, but the ordinary reader will also gain a rich experience of how a gifted psychotherapist works. For this book depicts the process honestly and with a minimum of presuppositions and technical terminology. Michael Fordham, from the foreword.
