Overview

What is the difference between a wedding and a marriage, and how can a happy couple prepare for it? These questions are a common theme in Rev. Dr. John R. Nagle's That The Two May Become One: The Good News Of God's Love Shared With The Happy Couple, where he often draws the distinction between the happy day itself and the lifetime of union through times both shining and dim that follows. Beginning from illustrations encompassing the bride and groom, the gathered friends and family, the circumstances of the day and the world around them, these sermons smoothly transition to connect to scripture, often chosen by the bride and groom in question. Though the chosen readings are sometimes the same, the application of the verses and the resulting messages are not. Throughout all the sermons the love of God is shared, biblically-based guidance is given, and the importance of Christ's role in marriage is emphasized. That The Two May Become One collects and presents Rev. Dr. Nagle's wedding sermons in the hope that both new husbands and wives and couples celebrating years together might find them good counsel. In all cases, this collection encourages couples to take a moment to reflect on how they can live out their lives and marriages in the love of God. Some sermon titles include: What It Means to Be Tied Up (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12) The Bridal Couple's Emergency Kit (Colossians 3:12-17) Here's How You Keep In Touch (1 Corinthians 13:1-13) Go For The High Notes! (Psalm 98:1-9) More Than A Pile Of Rocks (Matthew 7:24-27)

"Praise for That The Two May Become One The Reverend Doctor John Nagle served as pastor of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Cary, North Carolina, (until retirement) leading a small mission congregation to one of the largest Lutheran congregations in the southeastern United States. During that time, Dr. Nagle delivered many wedding sermons and these are some of his best! These winsome sermons begin with an illustration to connect those gathered with the couple and the world around them and move quickly to scripture and proclamation of God's word. A distinction is made between this joy-filled wedding day and the days of marriage which follow. While the wedding is glorious, there will be times in the marriage that are not glorious and these sermons provide counsel and suggestions on how they can prepare and respond when it is ""better"" or ""worse""! The love of Christ the king is shared, often using scripture chosen by the couple, to explain how Christ should be a part of the growing/changing relationship of marriage. These short and concise sermons, wordsmithed by Dr. Nagle, would serve as good counsel for any couple preparing to spend their lives together. In fact, these sermons would be helpful to any couple in a serious relationship or long-time married. I appreciate these sermons of grace and wisdom written by a loving caring pastor who ""tells it like it is""! Leonard H. Bolick, Former Bishop, NC Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America With depth, warmth and humor, John Nagle's preaching touches our hearts, enlivens our relationships, and surprises us with powerful insights that strengthen our relationships of love with one another and with God. A book to be treasured, these sermons are fresh, lively, and filled with deep wisdom. Anne-Marie Neuchterlein, M.D, Ph.D., Author Couples' Bible study. Gift for newlyweds. Anniversary gift. Marriage counseling. This little book of wedding sermons is a delight, a revelation, and a must for numerous audiences. Whether considering marriage or in it for fifty years, an insightful compendium of biblically based advice. Sandra R. Cline, Call Process Coordinator, NC Synod, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America The question asked is more important than the answer found at times. This is a core message of the Reverend Doctor John Nagle's preaching and teaching for as long as I have known him. In these brief homilies, he gets young couples embarking on the journey of marriage to look at life a bit differently than perhaps they had anticipated. The messages call us to take personal responsibility for the marriages we create. The best part, though, is that he gets all couples to stop and reflect on how they are living out their marriages. Just married or married 36 years as I am, these homilies will make you smile, think, and maybe live just a little differently.
