In a highly satisfying account of the exploits of the privateer/pirate Hipolito Bouchard, Briggs shines a light on Spanish colonial rule in the early 19th century and the revolutionary fervor that cast it off throughout the Americas. Bouchard's voyage brought him to our own California coast and Briggs teaches us some forgotten local history in the telling.
