Overview

Now in its third edition, this text has been enriched with more information to understand animal behaviour. The book provides an account of animal behaviour for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Although animal behaviour has fascinated people for a long period, behavioural biology has been incorporated in the syllabi very recently. The study of behaviour received its important boost from the work of Charles Darwin who used the term ""instinct"", to refer to the natural behaviour of animals. In the 1930s, a comprehensive theory of animal behaviour emerged through the work of Konrad Lorenz and, later of Niko Tinbergen. Scientific analysis of animal behaviour is significant for several reasons. Each species tends to have an array of stereotyped behaviours, some of which are shared with related species, but others are unique. Ecology, natural selection, macroevolution, microevolution, and genes constitute the foundation of animal behaviour. Fatik Baran Mandal, PhD, Associate Professor of Zoology, Bankura Christian College, Bankura, West Bengal has more than 17 years of teaching experience. He has been awarded Fellowship of Zoological Society of India (FZSI) in the year 1995. Dr. Mandal, a member of the Advisory Board of the Journal of Scientific Review, Editorial Board member of the World Journal of Science and Technology, Open Research Journal of Science and Environment, and Science Journal Internationalis a reviewer of several Journals. A member of several national and international organizations, he is also a faculty member of Webmed Central. He has authored six books, including Human Parasitology (Second Edition), and Invertebrate Zoology, published by PHI Learning. His field of interest includes ecology and evolutionary biology, biodiversity, parasitology, and behavioural biology.
