Overview

Terrorism and National Security: Student Investigative File is a uniquely immersive educational experience that provides students with terrorism and national security-related fact patterns and hypothetical, fluid scenarios while challenging them to assume the role of an investigator. As the investigator, students examine the facts, build a case, and plan court-related outcomes within this affordable text/workbook with accompanying active learning materials. To complement the fact patterns, the text includes crime scene illustrations, worksheets, and example legal documentation. Students receive investigative updates throughout each section to help them organize and build their case while also learning professional record-keeping and report writing skills. With proper investigative techniques and application of the law, their investigation culminates in a hypothetical resolution and charge. This text helps students foster their knowledge of classifications and designations of terrorism, investigative techniques, legal considerations, examples of hate crimes, research of relevant case material, investigations of a group versus individual offenders, and more. Terrorism and National Security is part of the From the Files of Fanelli and Moscato: An Investigative Criminal Justice Series, a collection of scenario-based textbooks and active learning materials that help students cultivate critical thinking and investigative skills while applying their knowledge of key criminal justice principles, techniques, and theories. New instructor resource coming soon! In early 2023, audio and video narration by leaders in the field and subject matter experts will be available for each title in the series. The narration walks students through each section of the investigation process, providing them with a mentor-like learning experience and a unique perspective on both theory and practice.

Reviews

Fanelli & Moscato's Terrorism and National Security: A Student Investigative File is an excellent practical exercise workbook that deviates from the traditional textbook-based learning method. It encourages self-study and hands-on learning by putting students in the role of investigators working alongside local/state partners and staff personnel. The workbook achieves a unique balance of being concise while providing depth of content. Students and instructors alike will prefer this learning mode. More than ever, investigators today need critical thinking skills that are developed through experience, teamwork, and continuous hypothesis testing. This workbook provides a strong foundation for aspiring law enforcement professionals. As an added bonus, the scenarios are quite enjoyable! N.K., Supervisory Special Agent, Federal Bureau of Investigation I find the workbook clear, concise, and illuminating for introductory courses on terrorism and national security. The assignments are user friendly and most relevant for showing an understanding of the material previously explained. It reinforces the different conceptual distinctions, such as the one between domestic and international terrorism, and helps students to get a better understanding of these concepts. It certainly demonstrates that the authors have dedicated a great deal of time in designing these assignments, which makes this workbook most appealing from a student's perspective. Hence, I find such an approach not only interesting but most importantly pedagogically sound. [...] The author's actual and hypothetical case studies are accessible and also well developed for the students to get a clear but nuanced understanding of the material in question. By posing the questions first, the students can focus in looking for the right answers, and by asking for the pros and cons of a given concept or scenario, they encourage students to think critically about the issues or concepts in question. By encouraging critical thinking, the authors avoid one-sided interpretations of highly contestable concepts, such as terrorism and national security. I think the authors do an excellent job in accomplishing such a valuable pedagogical goal in a rather compressed and affordable way without sacrificing accuracy and/or complexity. That is a remarkable accomplishment, and I commend the authors for it. Vicente Medina, Professor of Philosophy, Seton Hall University
