OverviewDue to the isolated location of most islands, meeting energy needs is extremely important both economically and environmentally. For islands to achieve sustainable development, the use of endogenous resources is essential. Islands have the potential to become self-sufficient by using the renewable energy sources available to them, which is the answer to the problems of increasing energy consumption and fossil fuel scarcity, problems that are even more relevant in isolated systems such as islands. Reducing dependence on fossil fuels is essential, and to do so, it is necessary to invest in renewable energy sources which, with the right technologies and the necessary potential, can replace fossil fuels. The island of Terceira is 92.4% dependent on fossil fuels for electricity production, a scenario that is incompatible with the definition of sustainable development. It is urgent to find alternative and sustainable solutions to the current situation. This work presents the potential of different renewable energies on Terceira Island and measures to make the island sustainable.
