R.S. Khandpur, Ph.D., has been Director General, Centre for Electronics Design and Technology of India (Ministry of Information & Communication Technology), Government of India (1997-2002); Founder Director, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Mohali (1989-2002) and Scientist and Head, Medical Instruments Division, CSIR-Central Scientific Instruments Organisation, Chandigarh (1965-1989). He steered the establishment of the Pushpa Gujral Science City, Kapurthala (2002-2014), a joint project of the Government of India and Government of Punjab almost from scratch and developed it as an international Science Centre. Besides, he has been on the Board of Governors of prestigious public sector organisations. The teaching of Medical Instrumentation as a distinct subject of study started for the first time in the country with the publication of Dr. Khandpur's unique book Electronic Instrumentation in Medical Practice in 1975. He has published 10 books in India and USA including Handbook of Biomedical Instrumentation, which have gone into several reprints and have received excellent reviews. His outstanding contribution to the academic world has earned him 'Distinguished Visiting Professorship' of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Indian National Academy of Engineering.
