Overview

This book describes the evolution of different generations of cellular technologies cumulated in the most recent 5G revolution worldwide. It explains the key features and innovations of the 5G network and how it differs from previous generations. Using the framework of the IEEE Future Networks Initiative (FNI), the authors outline the major projects carried out by the technical and vendor communities in different countries. It provides an overview of current 5G testbeds and their use cases around the world, the 5G deployment status of the operators, an overview of 5G specific standardization by several standards bodies including IEEE, 3GPP, NGMN. Since IEEE 5G includes 22 different contributing IEEE Societies, it includes a description of how each of these Societies is going to contribute to the 5G eco-system including standardization.
