At a time when educators, including early career teachers and those in teacher training, surely need concise and valuable guidance about classroom practice, this book is an absolute gift. It is critical that all educators are clear about their role in ensuring that inclusive, safe study environments are created to maximise learning and outcomes for our students. Teaching in FE and Skills offers important and constructive advice and support, maintaining a clear focus on the student experience, which will assist educators in post-16 settings to understand how to get the best from their students and themselves. Polly Harrow, Assistant Principal Kirklees College / DfE Student Support Champion This textbook is an important addition to our sector's professional library. What I love about this book is that it doesn't just set out the mechanics of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment; it grounds them in the reality of FE and skills, with all its richness, complexity and heart. Written with real accessibility, it manages to be both academically rigorous and utterly practical, a combination we know our colleagues across the sector need and deserve. Crucially, ETF's Professional Standards are embedded throughout. This matters. Professionalism in FE and skills is about more than technical competence: it is about identity, confidence, and belonging to a community of practice that is united by shared standards. This is a resource that will strengthen confidence in our teachers, provide clarity in what high-quality practice looks like, and, most importantly, remind us that FE and skills is a profession defined by commitment, creativity and care. Dr Vikki Smith, Executive Director, Education & Standards, ETF FE colleges are complex learning environments. They are the subjects of government Acts, white and green papers, codes of practice, and policy guidelines. Their curricula are far wider than those in schools, and their teachers often need to be dual-professionals...With such demands, it's critical that teachers use evidence-informed techniques to best stimulate learning. But that's not as simple - nor desirable - as simply adopting the pedagogy profile of schools. Given the different challenges and demands of FE colleges and their students, intelligent choices need to be made to best address their dynamics of learning. This book is a wonderfully supportive guide through this network of perspectives and frameworks. It is both comprehensive and yet also very accessible. It shines a lucid light on the myriad demands on teachers. The organisation of the content is really clear, the writing direct and informative, and the ideas inspiring and practical. Its three authors are highly respected in the sector, with decades of experience across a number of different levels from teacher to manager and from trainer to designer. They share a deep commitment to the success of their colleagues. This book, I believe, will enable that to happen. I recommend it to all.
